Description

If you're looking for a really refined stuffing for your Thanksgiving turkey, try this wonderful recipe featuring Italian sausage. After all, turkey stuffing originated from Italian recipes that involved stuffing birds and other meats with mixtures of bread, herbs, and spices. The practice of stuffing poultry became more popular in England during the 16th century, and the combination of stuffing with turkey as a holiday tradition grew in the United States.

Ingredients

10 ounce box of Mrs. Cubbison’s Cube Stuffing Herb Seasoned

2 tablespoons plus ½ cup (1 stick) of Butter, melted

1 cup onion finely chopped

3 cloves garlic finely chopped

1 cup celery chopped

¼ cup carrot chopped

3 Italian Sausages (suggestion: try a spicy sausage, but you can also use mild sausages.), uncooked

Half of the Giblets from a Whole Turkey

1 teaspoon of Italian Seasoning

1 tablespoon of Montreal Seasoning

1 ½ cups of Turkey Broth (for homemade, please click here to see recipe, or you can use Chicken Broth from the grocery store.)

Directions

Before making the stuffing, heat the oven to 350 degrees, and cook the Italian sausage for 30-45 minutes on a half baking sheet until fully cooked. Remove from the oven, and once cooled, chop down to ¼ inch cubes.

In a sauce pan, add 2 tablespoons of butter and sauté the giblets until browned or for about 10-15 minutes.

Once browned, remove the giblets from the sauce pan and add ½ cup of butter and the onion, garlic, celery and carrots to the sauce pan. Cook on a medium heat until the onion and garlic are translucent; the celery and carrots should still be somewhat firm. Chop the giblets down and then add to the sauce pan.  Sprinkle with the Italian seasoning and the Montreal Seasoning, and heat on medium heat.

Cook the vegetables and giblets until firm but easy to chew and then add the chopped Italian Sausage and cook for about 5 more minutes. Remove from heat and place in a bowl. Heat the chicken or turkey broth (for homemade turkey broth, please click here to see the recipe) in the same sauce pan until it is boiling.

Add the stuffing cubes to the bowl with the vegetables, the giblets, and the broth and mix well. Place the stuffing in a serving dish and enjoy!
